EVERYTHING that it was cracked up to be!!!....so much racing, so much excitement. I'm off to bed a happy chappy!
Let's hope my pics can show some of tonight's excitement. Well done to BOTH teams and to all the riders....Brilliant.
Spare a thought for Jordy though...a heart felt plea at the end? Jordan HAS to be the Rider of the Year! Without wishing to take anything away from ANY of the other riders, Jordan has become a simply stunning RACER (and I don't mean a Reading asset!!!).
Let's hope that he can get the assistance that he so obviously needs.

GIANT'S NEWS

Giants Take To Track Against Newport
The Somerset Giants continue their second half Academy Challenge matches with the visit of a team representing the Newport Mavericks at the Oak Tree Arena tomorrow [Wednesday] night. As has been well documented, speedway at Newport suddenly came to a close midway through the current season due to the untimely passing away of their promoter Tim Stone, but fans of the club are determined to keep the name of Newport speedway to the fore via the club’s junior team, the Mavericks.Keen to help their near neighbours, Somerset Giant’s team manager, Ray Dickson has arranged this Academy Challenge match against a side representing the Mavericks which will take place tomorrow night following the Somerset Rebels top of the table clash with Edinburgh in the Premier League. The match between the Giants and the Mavericks will be ruin over the usual four rider, six heat format used at Somerset for the second half Academy meetings which has consistently produced racing of the highest quality for these young riders just starting out on their speedway careers, the benefits of the Academy Challenge matches at Somerset being seen with riders such as Kyle Newman, Andy Braithwaite and Brendan Johnson all receiving call ups into the main Somerset squad to act as their ‘number 8’ during Simon Walker’s current absence from the team due to a back injury.
Somerset Giants; 1) Kyle Newman, 2) Marc Andrews, 3) Andy Braithwaite, 4) Brendan Johnson
Newport Mavericks 1) James Williams, 2) David Gough, 3) Tom Young, 4) Danny Stoneman

Somerset Giants 25 – 11 Newport Mavericks
The Somerset Giants made experience tell with a comfortable 25-11 victory over the Newport Mavericks in last night’s Academy Challenge match at Somerset’s Oak Tree Arena.
The Giants set their stall out from the off with a maximum 5-1 heat win in the first of the six heats, Kyle Newman taking the first of what was to be four unbeaten races, he being well backed up by Marc Andrews.
Brendan Johnson took the chequered flag in heat 2, but with Newport’s Tom Young holding off a strong challenge from Somerset’s Andy Braithwaite for second place it restricted the Giants to a 4-2 and a 6 point lead overall.
Andrews suffered the highs and lows of speedway in this match, after his impressive second place in the opening race; he then seized an engine in heat 3 to end his participation in the match. As the race continued, it produced racing of the highest quality that belied the relatively limited experience of the riders on show as Somerset’s Andy Braithwaite and Newport’s David Gough rode wheel to wheel for virtually the whole race, action that would not have been out of place in the Premier League match that had preceded this Academy meeting.
Newman and Johnson showed their Conference League class, they both riding at reserve for Weymouth this year, as they secure a relatively straightforward 5-1 for the home side in heat 4 to take the Giants 8 points to the good, a lead that was stretched out to 12 with another maximum 5-1 to the Giants in the penultimate heat, Newman and Johnson again being the providers.
The final heat also gave the home side a further heat advantage 4-2, Newman round off his maximum with a good win over the impressive Gough to give a final scoreline of Somerset Giants 25, Newport Mavericks 11
Scorers:
Somerset Giants
1) Kyle Newman 12,
2) Marc Andrews 2+1
3) Andy Braithwaite 4
4) Brendan Johnson 7+2
Newport Mavericks
1) James Williams 1
2) David Gough 5
3) Tom Young 3
4) Danny Stoneman 2 |
